Plants that are Poisonous to Horses and Ponies

If you think your horse or pony has been poisoned you should consult us immediately.  The list below contains plants that many horse owners already know about but there are some surprises so well worth making yourself aware of plants that you might not have realized may cause a problem. 

High Risk:

Box, Cowbane, Foxglove, Hemlock, Herb Paris, Horsetail, Laburnum, Lily of the Valley, Lupin, Meadow Saffron, Black Nightshade, Bracken, Cuckoo Pint, Deadly Nightshade, Hellebore, Hemlock water-dropwart, Henbane, Iris, Larkspur, Monkshood, Privet, Potato, Ragwort, Rhododrendron, Yew.

Medium Risk:

Acorns, Alder Buckthorn, Black Bryony, Broom, Buckthorn, Buttercup, Celandine - greater, Charlock, Cherry Laurel, Chickweed, Clover, Columbine, Corncrockle, Darnel, Ground Ivy, Groundsel, Hemp Nettle, Horse Radish, Linseed, Marsh Marigold, Melilot, Mercury, Oak, Pimpernal, Poppy, Rhubarb, Rush, St Johns Wort, Sorrel, Spurge, Thorn Apple, White Bryony, Woody Nightshade. 

This list does not include every plant that might pose a risk - others might be found in a rural or urban landscape. Please do contact us if you know of any other plant that is potentially poisonous.
